| Nobody¡¯s Choice |
|
| ¡°All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord¡¯s.¡± ( 1 Samuel 17:47 , NIV ) |
|
Can you remember with great excitement all the neighborhood kids gathered around the sandlot to play baseball? Everyone is excited and ready to play. Suddenly, that excitement becomes a dim hope as teams are picked and you are the last one standing all alone. Too fat, too short, too ugly, too slow, too stupid. Rejection! Kids can be terribly cruel! You stand there all alone. The pain cuts like a knife.
David stood all alone, too, as he was nobody¡¯s choice to be king. Just when you thought Samuel had exhausted all of the possibilities from Jesse¡¯s sons, Samuel asked, ¡°Are these all your children?¡± Jesse replied, ¡°I do have another son, but he¡¯s just a boy, he¡¯s just a shepherd.¡± He is nobody¡¯s choice.
It was doubtful that Jesse ever saw kingly qualities in David, and sadly, Jesse also convinced his seven other sons that David was a nobody as well. Even though Jesse did not think much of his youngest son, Samuel insisted on seeing him.
Imagine David¡¯s surprise as one minute he is nobody¡¯s choice, and the next minute he is everyone¡¯s king.
Aren¡¯t you glad God looks beyond externals and gives us all a chance to become who He intends in His Kingdom!
God has put something noble and good
into every heart which his hand created.
