Paul’s letter to the Corinthian Christians was written from Ephesus. He explained his delaying a visit to Corinth: he should remain at Ephesus until Pentecost because a great door for effectual work was there and there were many opposers.
The little conjunction “and” in Paul’s message (not “but”) is eloquent of commitment and faith. It says what he wrote in another letter: “If God is for us, who can be against us?”
I remember a sermon by a dedicated, enthusiastic minister in which he said: “If God tells me to walk through a wall, it’s my business to walk and God’s business to make the hole.”
For Paul, God had made the door and God would deal with opposition. In Acts 19 we read of opposition to Paul in Ephesus. The Jewish exorcist, Sceva, who tried to compete with Paul was chased from the scene. Demetrius, the silversmith, raised a riot that was quashed by the city authorities. Paul wrote of fighting with beasts at Ephesus (1 Corinthians 15:32). We do not know exactly to what he referred, but in none of these things was he defeated in a ministry that saw the gospel spread throughout that region (Acts 19:10). The message to us: Go through any door with God unafraid. |

| 문(門)과 대적들 |

바울은 에베소에서 고린도 교인에게 편지를 띄웠습니다. 고린도 방문이 지연되는 이유를 이렇게 설명했습니다. 즉, 바울이 오순절까지 에베소에 머물려 함은 선교의 큰문이 열리고 대적하는 자가 많기 때문이었습니다.
두 상황을 ‘역접’이 아닌 ‘순접’으로 잇고 있는 접속사는 바울의 믿음과 헌신이 어떠한지를 보여 줍니다. 다른 편지에서 바울은 이렇게 적고 있습니다. “하나님이 우리를 위하시면 누가 우리를 대적하리요?”
이 구절로 인해 생각나는 말이 있습니다. 헌신적인 어떤 전도자의 열정적인 설교입니다. “하나님이 내게 벽을 뚫고 걸어가라 명하시면, 내가 할 일은 걸어가는 것이고 하나님의 일은 벽에 통과할 구멍을 만드는 것입니다.”
바울에게 있어, 하나님은 문을 만드시고 대적하는 것을 처리하는 분이십니다. 사도행전 19장은 에베소에서 바울을 대적하는 사람들에 대한 얘기입니다. 유대의 한 제사장인 스게가 마술을 행하여 바울과 경쟁하려 했다가 그 자리에서 쫓겨났습니다. 데미드리오라는 은장색이 바울을 대적하여 소동을 일으켰다가 관원에게 진압되었습니다. 바울은 에베소에서 맹수와도 싸웠다고 적고 있습니다(고전 15:32). 이 말이 정확히 무슨 의미인지 모릅니다. 그러나 여기 바울이 사역 중에 물리쳤다고 나열된 것 중에 그 어느 것도 그 지역에 복음이 두루 전파된 것을 보지 못했습니다(행 19:10). 여기서 이런 교훈을 얻습니다. 즉, 무슨 문이든지 하나님과 함께 담대하게 통과하십시오. |
