| Making Peace |

| "And through him to reconcile to himself all things, . . . by making peace through his blood." ( Colossians 1:20 , NIV ) |

When Abraham Lincoln was President, a woman who thought he was too lenient in his opinion of the rebellious Southerners berated him at a dinner party. Instead of considering them erring friends, she announced that he should be thinking of ways to destroy his enemies. "Madam," Lincoln softly replied, "when I make my enemies to become my friends, have I not destroyed my enemies?"
It is only by the willing sacrifice of our "rights" that we can gain lasting peace with those who have injured us. The Lord gave us His right to justice in order to save our lives and give us an opportunity to return to our Father as His children instead of facing Him as enemies. He saved us and gave us high position, threading us into a tapestry of faithful family members.
It is our responsibility to reflect that selfless love in our dealings with others. When we give up the "right" to justice, the "right" to fairness, the "right" to be right, we can gain the love and trust of those who have wounded us. And those who have considered us enemies may once more be our brothers and sisters, united in relationship with the Father of us all. |

Father, thank You so much for loving me enough to want peace with me. Help me this day to love others in the same way. In Your Son's name. Amen.

| 화평케 하라 |

| "그의 십자가의 피로 화평을 이루사 만물을...... 그로 말미암아 자기와 화목케 되기를 기뻐하심이라." ( 골로새서 1:20) |

아브라함 링컨 대통령이 현직에 있을 때, 만찬회에서 어떤 부인이 링컨을 비난한 적이 있습니다. 대통령이 남군에게 지나치게 관대하다는 것이었습니다. 남군을 잘못하고 있는 친구가 아닌 적으로 생각하고 섬멸해야한다고 주장했습니다. 링컨은 여유 있게 대답했습니다. "부인, 내가 적을 친구로 만들면 적을 섬멸하는 것이 아닐까요?"
우리의 권리를 기꺼이 버릴 때에만 우리에게 상처를 주는 사람과 영원히 화평할 수 있습니다. 주님은 우리를 구원하여 하나님 아버지께 돌아오는 기회를 주시기 위해서 주님이 가진 공의의 권리를 우리에게 주셨습니다. 그래서 우리는 하나님과 적으로 대면하지 않고 하나님의 자녀가 되었습니다. 하나님이 구원하시고, 우리를 서로 믿는 가족이라는 자수에 구성원으로 수(繡)놓아서 높은 지위로 올리셨습니다.
이제 우리는 사람관계에서 이타적 사랑을 보여야 합니다. 우리가 가진 권리를, 그것이 판단이나 공정함 또는 옳음에 대한 권리이든, 포기하면 우리를 아프게 해 왔던 사람한테서 사랑과 믿음을 얻습니다. 적대시하던 사람이 다시 우리의 형제자매가 되어 우리 모두의 아버지인 하나님과 더불어 하나가 될 것입니다. |
