Doors and Adversaries
V: This morning’s Power for Today author says that there is a big difference between the “conjunction” (or joining word) “and” and the word “but.”

D: Right. They are both small words, but are so different.

V: He says that when the Apostle Paul decided to stay in the city of Ephesus until the Jewish holiday, Pentecost, he knew there was “a great door for effectual work.”

D: Yes. He is saying that God was opening a door of opportunity for effective service in that city.

V: And then Paul says next, “and there are many who oppose me.”

D: Here Paul does not say “but there are . . .” He says, “And there are.”

V: This morning’s author says that Paul’s choice of “and” and not “but” is “eloquent of commitment and faith.” What does that mean?

D: Well, Paul’s word choice shows that he is not discouraged. So, it really is an “eloquent” (or well spoken) word that shows he still trusts in the Lord.

V: The author also quotes a line from a sermon that he heard one time. The minister said, “If God tells me to walk through a wall, it’s my business to walk and God’s business to make the hole.”

D: That’s a great line. You understand it, don’t you?

V: Yes. He is saying that sometimes it might look like God expects us to do the impossible (like walk through a wall).

D: Right. And if God asks us to walk through a wall, then it is our “business” (or job) to walk through a wall, and it is God’s “business” (or job) to make a hole in the wall.

V: Paul believes that God has opened a door there. Of course, there is opposition, like Sceva, the Jewish “exorcist” (one who casts out demons) and Demetrius, the “silversmith” (the man who makes things from silver).

D: There is even a “riot” (or huge fight) that is “quashed” (or stopped) by the authorities.

V: So let’s use the word “and” a lot more, not “but.”
